Horse Photography

After borrowing a trailer to pick up additional baby-furniture from Baby Bunting last weekend, I stopped to take photographs of the horses owned by family up in the Adelaide Hills.  After a long day with their young riders, here they enjoy a drink and a laugh whilst  having their saddles removed.

Photographs at the Adelaide Clipsal500 2012

Have you seen my photographs from day 1 and 3 of the 2012 Adelaide Clipsal500? I didn’t shoot as many as I have done in previous years.

I feel they didn’t have enough for the average punter who wanted to eat and go on show-rides, or check out the various car-brand marquees. There was about 3 big show-rides and throughout the entire open area I traversed three foot-bridges (that I recall) that led me between the many coffee, meat and cold drink stalls.

Whilst those that bought grandstand and corporate tickets might have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the thousands of spectators I saw standing at 3metre high fences were lucky to catch glimpses of car-races. There was more spoken-noise coming from the few mega-speakers strapped to the fence than there was car-noise coming from the track. I recall standing in the shade of ugly seating listening to commentators, for over 30minutes, discuss the activity in their compere-box rather than the action on the track. I eventually walked away asking myself what I had paid for!

I tried to stay for the evening concerts, but at the times I left the encaged parks both the weather and the atmosphere had gone stale. I was going to stay for the INXS concert on Saturday night, but at the first hint of rain I decided to get my camera-equipment out of danger. Pity, because I heard the rain stopped.

Yet I didn’t leave empty handed. Check out a few of the many photographs I shot throughout the day. Where I couldn’t find sufficient breaks in the mesh-fencing, I manually focused on the tarmac beyond and swept my camera as the cars flew by. Thankfully, said with tongue in cheek, I captured the cars a few times. Hope you enjoy, check them out below:

Better Beach Photography

Beach House A friend on Facebook has a whole series of beach shots, and in one of them she asked how to add more light to a scene. She had photographed the female model facing away from the sun, with the shallow water in the background where small waves were rolling in.

She was so close to getting the photos to look so good, but clearly had one element missing: An external flash.

In a heart-beat, I had determined what I would do, plus had a few other ideas in mind. But because most of my skill has been learnt from trial and error, not from any online nor institutional training, I couldn’t explain easily.

Instead, I went googling for articles that would give a better overall explanation of how to add more light to a beach photograph. The following articles and videos are some of the best I could find at short notice. I do hope they explain it for you.

The biggest tip/trick these video’s teach is how to use umbrella’s, diffusers and your external flash to your advantage. Mostly they say don’t aim the flash at the model – aim at the umbrella or diffuser. The sun becomes your secondary or ambient-light. The sun gives you the golden-colour, whereas your external flash pumps up the brightness. Here is another one…

Morning Photography

Not much to say tonight, so will show off my photographs from this morning’s walk up into Blackwood. I have visited this location before, but that was with my old Canon 400D and some old stock lens. This time I went with my Canon 50D and 70-300mm f4 telephoto lens. Certainly makes a difference.

That was 1.5 hours of photography this morning … before the heat of the day took over. Let’s hope the weather cools down enough to shoot more interesting objects, places and maybe even a few more people next weekend.
