Persistence + Perseverance + Perspiration = Walking Again

See my right knee?
It’s the one on the left.

I’m standing on it.

It still aches, particularly after walking on a rocky beach from the Kingscote Jetty to the bird-house at Reeves Points, then up 75° incline – with my amazing 5yo son Jai alongside me, my Canon 7D and new zoom lens. I shot some amazing shots, some of them without Jai in them.

It still aches because about 55 weeks ago it somehow collapsed under me for no easy-to-explain reason. I stood at the kitchen sink of our Adelaide home with 1yo Aidan in my arms, went to turn right – and my knee basically slipped to the left side of my leg, stretching ligaments and hurting so bad that Aidan’s (still sitting in the nook of my left arm) eyes bulged out from the naughty words I screamed. Holy mo…. you get the picture. But I thought of him, and twisted my leg to the left – because I knew I was going to collapse BUT I DIDNT WANT TO FALL ONTO HIM. The knee then twisted around to the right side of my leg. I fell, no I collapsed. Aidan was bawling his eyes out.

But me, despite the fuc… intense pain, I started pulling my pants down. I’ve done some seriously bad injuries to my knees, ankles, elbows, and hips in many stupid stupid accidents over the last 30 years. I knew the parademics were going to cut my pants off. But I liked those denims, I didn’t want to lose them. (I did.) But I really had to know how bad it was.

Fargnl. I screamed for everyone – who were out in the shed doing something. Probably making bee boxes for LSBeez Kangaroo Island Honey. I didn’t care. Jai arrived first. I yelled at him to get mummy. Know what he did first? Got me a towel to put under my leg.

Then Sarah (my wife) and Lynne (my MIL) arrived. I did not care that my jocks were on show. My right knee was expanding – and only I knew how bad the injury was.

But I was lucky. Sarah knows why and how I break so easily. She rang for an ambulance. I sat on kitchen floor, ice on knee, waiting. 40mins later it arrived.

Ambulance took me to Flinders Hospital.

We ramped behind 4 other amb’s for about 3 hours.

Then I got a bed, a vomit bag filled with ice chips to hold on my knee … and the doctor arrived around midnight. The accident happened around 4.30pm.

There’s much more to the story.

But my knee works again. I walk just fine. I was still limping from thr injuries when I first arrived on KI in Feb 2017. I don’t think any of you would know if I didn’t tell you.

Persistence.

Perseverance.

Perspiration.

I may not have a paying job right now. But I know what it means to fail and succeed.

Photos from today can wait. My knee aches.

Not Everybody’s Cup of Tshirts

As a part-time hobby I design artwork for tshirts for a whole range of amazing clients.

Usually they send me a drawing or a screen-dump of something they’d like to see printed on a Tshirt. Unfortunately some I have to reject because of ‘Intellectual Property‘ laws, or it’s a blatant ripoff. Satirical pieces I have done, but more often I redesign an idea into something completely new.

Some people might take offense to words in some of my tshirt designs. Maybe they grew up in an era where sexual thoughts and offensive language were not made public let alone printed on tshirts. Or on a coffee mug. Or on leggings.

At the very least I look at client ideas, and think to myself:If I was to reject your idea because I don’t like the message, or the lifestyle it promotes, or how some religious zealots may react, what am I really saying? That I am putting others’ beliefs above my client’s gender or life-choice? That someone else runs my business? That I can or will only do artwork with the approval of ALL the people in my life? Of course not, that would be silly. No, I won’t do that.

So occasionally I design a few tshirts that are going to offend a few people. Well, that’s easy: Don’t look. If you see the tshirt in the street, talk to that person – they paid for it. Or turn away. It’s like watching TV: If the channel is showing something you don’t like, change the channel.

To date nobody has complained or commented on my artwork – yet by publishing this, they may now.

When a client or a follower wants a design, I show them three examples of my design of their idea. Because they are rarely on commission, I show them how to purchase online via Redbubble.com. It’s really easy, you can pick from a whole lot of different colors, tshirt styles, and other merchandise you might like to see it on.

Checkout the following merchandise designed for various friends over the last ten years.

If you like any of them, you should be wearing them. Don’t let anyone stop you from being what you were born and who you are. Each image links back to my redbubble tshirt gallery where you can choose which best suits you.

PostScript: I finally designed an unusual request from a few years ago earlier this week. It’s actually nothing new, but they wanted to see how I would approach the design. Yes, the client is a lesbian – get over it. I know them, they are a beautiful person, and their lifestyle has no impact on you or me. In her words … “Even if you were my type, you’ll never know. Those that are my type, often know before I do.” That’s how all relationships should be. Look out for this tshirt-design, it will be online very soon … and I imagine it will be more popular than the ones above!

Good Memories

What makes me smile?

Remembering that in 1986 I wore a white suit (with tails), white shoes, and I think I also had a white top hat, to my senior prom.

When I got there (yes, with my date for the evening!), somehow I managed to get a rainbow bow-tie with flashing lights.

Oh yeah, I looked good.

Sigh.

The memories.

I might have looked idiotic to everyone else, but I felt good. And it still makes me smile when I remember it.

Free Advertising Space

When I first started blogging I had no idea where the future would take my scribblings. I readily admit that blogging was purely an escape from the realities around me.

Since then the articles have evolved into articles about the work I enjoy: photography, art, the art of fatherhood, plus a myriad of random subjects. I really should narrow it down, but then I get ideas that I let flow. Like my last post, I never know where my mind takes an idea.

About two years ago I had a silly idea that I could monetise my blog. I watched many other bloggers add Google Adsense and tried to follow their example. It hasn’t worked yet. See, I have a particularly appearance that I would prefer they adhered to. But they don’t. They are ugly.

So I have finally gotten smart. With my graphic art skills honed over the last fifteen years, I only advertise my family products. All the adverts below are in the sidebar of both mine and the kid’s blog. So here’s hoping you click on the links, go check them out, and maybe buy a tshirt or framed work. A father can dream.

So now you know what I do in my spare time. And how I make a little money from my blog.

FYI: I created all the graphics for these adverts. Some need more work or complete revitalisation. That’s the fun of this game – I can do that. I enjoy it.
