Casey, Your Knees Will Not Stop You!

I feel for Casey Neistat, I actually do. According to his latest video: His left knee creaks when he kneels. Presumably it is more noticeable when he runs. So he is concerned that he may never be able to run again.

I gave up running about 2 years ago, at least for long distances, because of multiple injuries suffered over the last 30-ish years. Casey, here is my list of injuries. They are why I feel for you.

1. I shattered my right knee in a silly accident 12 months ago. Stretched the ACL close to tearing. Took 6 months to fully recover, and now I feel it daily. So I know that pain. Condition as of August 2017.

Severely Sprained Ankle2. Multiple injuries in a freak accident in 2011. Not for the squeamish.

  • Left arm: Fracture, underside, close to elbow.
  • Right arm: Wrist strained & cutup from impact with bitumen
  • Left leg: Knee slashed, looked like needing stitches, instead has largest band-aid
  • Right leg: Ankle so heavily strained suspected broken. apparently not, yet swollen so bad that it looked like someone had shoved a hard-boiled egg down my leg.
  • Face: Right side battered, bruised and embedded with bits of bitumen.

3. I broke both arms in a freak bicycle accident in 1992. Took 2 weeks to get out of my hospital because the doctors wanted me to be independent in the bathroom… you get the picture.

4. In 1990-ish I lacerated the rear of my right ankle severely on a metal bike-pedal. Had both pedals replaced with plastic within months. The ankles were strapped to stop movement to stop the continuous bleeding when I walked. Took a few weeks to recover.

Tubes of Green5. In 1985, whilst holidaying in Queensland, we visited Wet’n’Wild. It was a lot different back then.
Anyhow, I was ‘travelling’ on a water-ride called the “White Water Rapids of Colorado”. Riders straddled large inner-tubes and endured fast-moving water on a slide that had multiple rock-shaped bumps at corners all along. Half-way-down a bunch of nitwits had joined arms and tubes to form a barrier – for whatever dumb reason. I was the first to hit the barrier. Accounts say my tube went flying over the edge of the slide. I continued the rest of the journey on my knees.
These days those rides have the last 20-metres of the tube in the water when it ends. Back when I did this, the tubes ended ABOVE the water. When I left the tube, I dropped about half-a-metre into the water. My right knee shattered instantly when it hit the bottom of the pool. My grandparents had no idea how bad my injury was. After much-too-much persistence, I was driven to Brisbane hospital … on the day the doctors went on strike. Flown to Canberra. Doctor’s strike started the day I got there. Flown to Adelaide. Doctor’s strike started the day I got there. Back to Murray Bridge hospital whose doctor’s decided my knee was far more important. Was on crutches for part of my last year of High School. Not many people remember it. Thankfully I recovered. The memory of having 8 large syringes of plasma removed my football-sized knee will never disappear. Nor will the beautiful TAA hostesses who treated me like a king in my wheelchair on every flight.

Casey, you are going to be OK.

You continue to inspire every content-creator on Youtube: You have so many abilities that not-running won’t stop you. Oh, and I am 12 years your senior. It hasn’t stopped me. I walk a lot, almost everywhere, and still manage to create content. Just not weekly like you do now.

If my readers haven’t seen Casey’s YouTube video showing his fear of never running again, here it is.

Keeping a Creative Mind Boosts Your Positive Attitude

I have known this about myself for a long time: Being creative keeps my mind stimulated and happy.

Doing nothing (i.e. watching TV) is literally mind-numbing, so I get bored and have to look for something new to do.

Thus explaining my active tshirt design making, photography, small business ventures/ideas, and extra-curricular activities. It all boosts my well-being, keeps me happy, and of a positive mind!

That said, I’ve had a horrific cough for about 10 days. Yes, no doctor visit. Figured I’d be over it sooner.

Last night I had a thought: It has been about 6 weeks since I had a coffee!

So I googled ‘can coffee help cure a cold‘. Yes I wanted a particular answer, so I had to dig deep. Found it:

“Coffee, believe it or not, is good for your sore throat, but only if you have a common cold. Don’t make it too strong, that’s just gross. Studies done suggest that coffee has two great benefits: tons of antioxidants and throat soothing qualities.”

I had a large Mocha coffee. My throat feels better … for now … and I am feeling boosted. Positively. :)

Move Forward, Look Ahead, Stay Focused

“Listen, do you wanna go back, or do you wanna stay here? I get it. It’s nice up here. You can just shut down all the systems, turn out all the lights, and just close your eyes and tune out everyone. …. It’s safe. I mean, what’s the point of going on? What’s the point of living? … But still, it’s a matter of what you do now. If you decide to go, then you gotta just get on with it. Sit back, enjoy the ride. You gotta plant both your feet on the ground and start livin’ life.”

Infamous quote by Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) when hallucinated by Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) whilst she is attempting space-based suicide in the movie ‘Gravity’ – with a few words removed so it can apply to everything we deal with in life.

Reach Out to Grab Opportunities

What I like most about this video is what you can see happening in the last metre:

~ First and 2nd place slow down, presumably thinking they’re so close to their goal that they can casually jog through. Yes, they’re still going pretty damn fast, but just watch their movements, you’ll notice they are slowing down.

~ Wottle, coming from last place, jumps to 3rd — then steals the lead and winning because he refuses to give in, refuses to slow down, he runs around those thinking winning place is theirs.

That’s a metaphor.

Start thinking with your feet.

Don’t let anyone or anything stop you, not your age, not lack of knowledge, not time nor distance. Not even heartache or loss. Take a chance, start again, keep moving forward, find a goal and target. Opportunities are yours if you reach out and grab them.
It’s that simple.

Oh, and be prepared – for both failure and success. Don’t be scared of either outcome. Failures are learning opportunities. Successes are not the end of the journey, they are usually the beginning of the next one.

Get moving, or your next journey will begin with you at the back of the pack..

Not Everybody’s Cup of Tshirts

As a part-time hobby I design artwork for tshirts for a whole range of amazing clients.

Usually they send me a drawing or a screen-dump of something they’d like to see printed on a Tshirt. Unfortunately some I have to reject because of ‘Intellectual Property‘ laws, or it’s a blatant ripoff. Satirical pieces I have done, but more often I redesign an idea into something completely new.

Some people might take offense to words in some of my tshirt designs. Maybe they grew up in an era where sexual thoughts and offensive language were not made public let alone printed on tshirts. Or on a coffee mug. Or on leggings.

At the very least I look at client ideas, and think to myself:If I was to reject your idea because I don’t like the message, or the lifestyle it promotes, or how some religious zealots may react, what am I really saying? That I am putting others’ beliefs above my client’s gender or life-choice? That someone else runs my business? That I can or will only do artwork with the approval of ALL the people in my life? Of course not, that would be silly. No, I won’t do that.

So occasionally I design a few tshirts that are going to offend a few people. Well, that’s easy: Don’t look. If you see the tshirt in the street, talk to that person – they paid for it. Or turn away. It’s like watching TV: If the channel is showing something you don’t like, change the channel.

To date nobody has complained or commented on my artwork – yet by publishing this, they may now.

When a client or a follower wants a design, I show them three examples of my design of their idea. Because they are rarely on commission, I show them how to purchase online via Redbubble.com. It’s really easy, you can pick from a whole lot of different colors, tshirt styles, and other merchandise you might like to see it on.

Checkout the following merchandise designed for various friends over the last ten years.

If you like any of them, you should be wearing them. Don’t let anyone stop you from being what you were born and who you are. Each image links back to my redbubble tshirt gallery where you can choose which best suits you.

PostScript: I finally designed an unusual request from a few years ago earlier this week. It’s actually nothing new, but they wanted to see how I would approach the design. Yes, the client is a lesbian – get over it. I know them, they are a beautiful person, and their lifestyle has no impact on you or me. In her words … “Even if you were my type, you’ll never know. Those that are my type, often know before I do.” That’s how all relationships should be. Look out for this tshirt-design, it will be online very soon … and I imagine it will be more popular than the ones above!

Instagram as a Self Motivation Platform

Those following my Instagram will have noticed that recently I have been using it as a platform to verbally present my self-motivation quotes.

Yes, I face either my smartphone or camera, often sprouting a mashup of these inspirational quotes.

Mostly I do this to improve my face mannerisms, vocal confidence and sentence structure. I know I talk fast, I know I slur, and I know I often push words together. Yet I want to improve my visual appearance for both my YouTube videos and Radio work.

So take a look at these, let me know what you think. I fully welcome any suggestions or support.

This one was where I decided to start recording 3 to 8 second clips because then I could put the emphasis on the correct word.

It all actually began with this one where I say Change the World. One of my brothers gave it for my 40th Birthday with the matching book (buried here somewhere!), and that day I figured it was time to start doing it. Let’s all change the world.

Then I started recording daily

"Do what you enjoy – and nothing less!" . . #quotetomyself #talkingtomyself #inspirationalquotes #stayingmotivated
